“I’m not at all sure that even a callous, irresponsible drug dealer with a 6-year- old in the house wouldn’t leave a child trigger lock on a stolen gun.”

President William Jefferson Clinton
on CNN’s Burden of Proof 3/9/00

An inexplicable tragedy—an outraged and anguished nation. What does the President of the United States do?

He calls for gun locks, and closing non-existent “gun show loopholes.”

A week later, the President of the United States is still at it and amends his early remarks with the incredible quote above.

It is time for reasonable people—whether they own guns or not—to seriously question this sort of nonsense.

• Does the President REALLY believe that criminals will obey regulatory laws when they are breaking statutory ones left and right?

• Does the President think a “callous, irresponsible drug-dealer” is superior to millions of law-abiding Americans who own guns?

• Does the President think that when the entire "Village" fails a 6-year-old boy and his 6-year-old victim that a trigger lock law will save him?

Do we really need to listen to a man so desperate to leave a positive legacy after seven years in office that he would slander American gunowners—the millions of people who are your neighbors, friends, relatives and co-workers.

Responsible American gunowners have developed nearly all of the gun safety programs that exist today.

But American gunowners know something the President of the United States doesn’t—there are no easy answers to hard questions, and there is no appetite in this country for blaming groups of people for the misdeeds of individuals.

When the next tragedy strikes will we lash out at blameless others because someone in Washington told us to blame them? Or will we look deeper at our problems?

“Solutions” only have value if they
solve problems. Sound bites don’t solve anything.

“Solutions” bring people together—they don’t further divide communities and the nation.

Tragedy must not be compounded by the spectacle of leaders sacrificing the rights of the innocent majority while failing to prosecute the guilty.
